Conference report "Pathways to Stability: Rethinking the EU's role in the Great Lakes"

On 2 October 2025, EurAc and the Just Future Alliance were pleased to welcome more than 150 participants in Brussels for a day of discussion devoted to the future of European action in the Great Lakes region. This report aims to present the key ideas, analyses, and lines of reflection from this day of exchange. It also sets out a series of recommendations and proposed actions for European decision-makers, which were collectively developed during the various workshops.

At a time when the countries of the Great Lakes region are facing a series of security threats that are jeopardising the future of the region's populations, the EU has been singled out for the ambiguity and contradictions of its political choices, further undermining its credibility with its partners and the Congolese people.

Joint NGO Statement: EU Conflict Minerals Regulation Failing to Reach Its Goals

More than six years after it was signed into law, the EU Regulation on the responsible supply of tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold (3TG) originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs) is failing to reach its key objectives: breaking the link between mineral exploitation and conflict financing and addressing human rights abuses in the supply chains.

WORKSHOP REPORT : European Regulation on Responsible Mineral Sourcing

The 1st of January 2021 marked the entry into force of the European Regulation on Responsible Sourcing of tin, tungsten tantalum and gold (3TG) from conflict-affected and high-risk areas (EU CMR or Regulation). The objective of the Regulation is to oblige European companies to carry out due diligence checks on their suppliers up-to the middle of the supply chain in order to minimize and manage the risks of human rights abuse and to break the link between the exploitation of mineral resources and violent conflicts.
