DR Congo new presidency and Universal Periodic Review: urging the EU and its member states to issue strong recommendations on the human rights situation in the country.

EurAc and the CCPR-Centre regret that the implementation of DR Congo’s commitment during its last Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of 2014 is still not effective, especially regarding the opening of political and civic space. In view of the upcoming UPR, the European Union (EU) and its member states must reiterate the recommendations issued in 2014 and formulate new ones on matters of corruption and natural resources.

The upcoming cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will take place in a particular context with the coming to power of a new president. This change of head of state should not lead states parties to the DRC’s UPR to minimise the alarming human rights situation in the country.

DR Congo: the EU must support regional positions by urging Congolese authorities to respect the truth of the ballot

As the High Representative Federica Mogherini and foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) Member States are due to discuss the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the next Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting on 21 January 2019, the European network for Central Africa (EurAc) and its 37 EU member organisations strongly encourage EU policy and decision-makers to support regional organisations’ positions and urge Congolese authorities to proceed to a transparent recount of the votes cast during the election of 30 December 2018.
